Let’s face it, prior to 2007, we had phones equipped with nothing more than low-end and unsophisticated point-and-shoot cameras that we un-apologetically used for capturing our experiences, moments, events, etc. (albeit most images were grainy, blurry, and pixelated).
Today, we can agree that the technology behind the modern smartphone camera has caught up to our imaginations and given us something we could not have foreseen. From the early days of the marriage between the phone and the camera until now, Pocket-size technologies and devices have forever changed (for the better) the photography and filmmaking landscape as we know it today.
What does this mean for filmmakers, photographers, and creative professionals around the world?
It means that bringing ideas to fruition has never been easier. From filmmaking to vlogging to mobile journalism to iPhoneography - a term totally born from the iPhone-natics of the world – storytellers and creative professionals are no longer strained and constrained by big budgets commonly associated with expensive professional video equipment and elaborate production setups.
Today’s creators are heading out to locations carrying no more than a small bag with a few choice accessories, and whipping out the smartphone, the tablet, etc. to feed their creativity.
And thanks to technology (one more time), the creative stories that we as fans are being treated to have been nothing short of astounding. In the words of Mark Twain, "So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
Make It Smart, Make it Good. Tell Stories.
